Installing Viability Themes

| | Comments closed

Is this your first time installing a theme for WordPress? Then welcome! We have made the Viability Framework theme and all of its child themes as simple as possible to install.

In fact, other than registering your license key it really is a one step process. No need to mess around with a bunch of files or type in any code.

To begin with, you will need a WordPress blog already setup and hosted as access to the WordPress dashboard is required. Secondly you will need to have downloaded the free Viability Framework theme or purchased one of our child themes.

Once you have purchased a theme, a link will be provided for you to download the theme as a zip file. Some browsers, when clicking on this link will automatically download the file and save it into your Downloads folder. If you wish to choose where to save it, right-click and go to Save Link As… Save this file somewhere on your computer where you can find it, as you will need it in a second. You will also be provided with a license key, copy this license key down in Word or Notepad and save it as it is very important. An active license key is required for any updates or support!

If you purchased a child theme, like Liftoff, you will need to download the child theme and any necessary plugins as well. You will need to keep the license key for the child theme too, as they are separate form each other and each must be activated!

Accessing the dashboard

Your first step is to access your WordPress dashboard, usually this means going to your site’s login page and entering your username and password. If you don’t know, check with your provider or web admin on how to login.

You will need to have Administer permissions in order to install the theme. If you do not, have these permissions, you might need to ask your web administrator to install it or give you permissions. Additionally you will need a small amount of storage for the files and any images you plan on uploading.

Using the built-in installer

Once you are at the dashboard, you will need to go to Appearance -> Themes as shown below.

This page is your theme selection page, here you can change your blog’s theme here, though most sites will only need to set it once. Click on the link at the top that says Add New. This will take you to a new page where you can select from a number of popular free themes. We are going to click the link at the top that says Upload Theme, this will show a button labeled Choose File.

This will open up your computer system’s Open File window. Navigate to where you saved your theme zip file at, and click Open. Finally click the Install Now button, double-checking the filename is correct.

WordPress will install the theme for you. If you wish to activate this theme, click on the Activate link after it installs. If you get a message about being unable to install the theme, please contact your hosting provider or web administrator for help. You can mention that it is likely a permissions issue when you tried to install a WordPress theme, they will usually know what that means.

If you purchased a child theme, you will need to install it too. Simply use the same steps as above to upload and activate the theme.

Activate your license key

Once your theme has been installed successfully, you will need to activate your license key in order to receive updates and support. To activate, go to Appearance -> Help & Support.

On this page, you will see a license key input field. Copy & paste the license key you copied down at the beginning, then click on the Save Changes button at the bottom. Finally click on the Activate License button next to the input field.

This will take a second to contact our server and activate the key. Once you receive a message saying it has been activated, you are all set!

If you purchased a child theme, you will need to input and activate the license key for the child theme as well. The steps are the same as above, including activating the license for the child theme as well.

That’s it! You are done installing

Next steps? Time to start customizing your theme.
